COASTAL scenes of Hillarys by Heathridge painting instructor Maria Bowers are among the diverse and colourful works at the Wanneroo Art Society’s autumn exhibition this weekend.
Bowers favours oil paints but other society members use a range of mediums.
Bowers follows a style adapted from one of her mentors.
“I start by putting paint on the canvas, then turps, then blowing it with a straw,” she said.
“I paint landscapes, seascapes, surrealism and sometimes copy the old masters, but my favourite is surrealism because you can look into more spiritual matters.”
The exhibition features one of her seascapes and surrealistic works “on the universe and celestial things”.
Water also fascinates Carine resident Rosalie Tolchard, whose seascapes depict Crawley and Hillarys.
“I work with watercolours because I like how I can start with one idea, put the water on and get a painting quite different to what I expected,” Tolchard said.
“It creates a lot of surprising results and happy mistakes.”
The exhibition is at Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club, south of Hillarys marina off West Coast Drive, from 7.30pm Friday, then from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
