Tradie troubles

WHAT is happening with our trades people? I know it is hard to find good trades people and they ask more and more money because WA is short of trades people.

But it is getting out of hand for the customers.

I need my dome roof fixing because it leaks. The company who installed it now wants me to pay $150 upfront before it even comes out.

And in this case, it is a continuous leak that has not been fixed since the roof was installed five years ago.

Where is the trust and is it fair to state that call-out fees should be deducted from the work?

Shouldn’t the company take pride in its product and make sure the problem gets fixed?

Who controls these fees? Is it acceptable to ask for a $150 upfront call-out fee?

In another instance, I called a security company to reset my alarm and install an extra monitor. The guy came out and had to read the manual on how to operate the alarm.

It cost me more than $400 to install a new monitor, reset a remote and change the security code.

Shouldn’t he be prepared before he came out so he would not have to waste time reading the manual?

He knew which model alarm it was before he came out. Is this the new way to make a quick buck?

When I teach, do I ask the children to be quiet for half the lesson so I can prepare the lesson and then teach them in the second half?

Have you tried visiting the web site www.rateatrade.com.au?

i always use the internet quoting service called www.serviceseeking.com.au

When i write a detailed description of the job required, parking access, rubbish removal for the job, and photograph anything that needs to be protected Service Seeking sends it out to all thier registered Tradies so they know what needs to be done, and are able to reply with thier most competitive quote. The replies may include an hourly rate for a job that they do not feel they can fairly calculate the time for, and others will send a straight price. tell them the Area postcode - to help them decide if its convenient for them, but not the address, until you have chosen the tradesmans quote that yiu feel most comfortable with.

i do not work for, i have no connection to, but appreciate the cost savings that can be obtained for the community by this service..
