THE Canning Arts Group has pulled off a recruiting coup, getting Richard Lane, of renowned indie rock band The Stems, to run public guitar lessons.

Lane, an accomplished vocalist and musician, has started children’s and adult guitar classes on Tuesdays at the group’s Riverton art centre complex.

The Stems, who were formed by Lane and Dom Mariani in 1983, rocked Perth pubs in the ’80s with their original music, including the single, Make You Mine.

Their album, At First Sight Violets Are Blue, was nominated in the top 100 Australian albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in the mid-’90s.

“I offered to help out because I’m passionate about music,” Lane said.

“Music is an art and I thought I could make a contribution to what this group is all about.”

The group is taking bookings for beginners, intermediate and advanced classes.

The one-hour classes for children start at 4.30pm and 5.45pm every Tuesday.

Adult classes start at 7pm.

I am an adult, own a guitar, but haven't given myself the opportunity or time to learn. I would love the chance to join the beginners group for adults to strum my beat. How much are the lessons, and where are you situated?
