St Mark’s should be retained for education, says Hyde

THE abandoned St Mark’s International College in Highgate must be retained for educational purposes, says Perth MLA John Hyde.

The language school closed unexpectedly in January and forced 500 international students and about 50 staff to other facilities.

The school was one of eight language schools across Australia that went into voluntary administration.

Mr Hyde said last week that with local inner-city schools at bursting point, the area could ill afford to lose the “prime education site”.

“The electorate of Perth is one of the only electorates without a high school – local residents are zoned to Mt Lawley Senior High School and it is now at full capacity,” he said.

“It makes perfect sense to ensure the site remains available for a potential private or public school use or another international college.”

Town of Vincent Mayor Nick Catania said he believed the site could only be used for educational purposes at the moment.

It is understood a creditors meeting between facility owners Finbar Group Limited and administrators Ernst and Young took place yesterday.
