DARLING Range Sports College teacher David Stivey has been announced as the assistant coach for the 2010 Under- 17s WA Schools’ Girls softball team.

The 15-strong squad will travel to Melbourne in May to compete against the best school-based softball players across Australia in a weeklong event.

Stivey said the West Australian team was extremely talented and could give other states a run for their money.

“The standard of players across the board is quite high and I wouldn’t expect anything less from the other states,” the 29-year-old said.

“The highest WA has ever finished is third, but in these types of competitions anything can happen.

“Some of the ladies have actually played with the current Women’s Open Championship team, and that’s a big thing for young players. If you combine that with the young talent we have coming through, then it’s a positive step forward all around.”

Stivey brings over 20 years’ experience to the plate, beginning in the tee ball ranks and working his way up to baseball in his teenage years.

“Baseball was my main sport, but we would play softball to keep the arms moving all year.

“I began coaching when I was 16 at Forrestfield. The choice of the coaching had a lot to do with the knowledge I’ve been given. I had many great coaches over the years that have taught me some great skills.”

The Thornlie resident said the sport’s appeal lay in its quick and constant movement.

“The ball is fast, players are always on and off the field, and you’re never standing around doing nothing.

“Softball keeps you on your toes.”

- The squad, headed by coach and current WA Open Women’s Team captain Michelle Andrew, will fly to Victoria on May 1 and play 10 games in six days.
