BAD weather gave Wannanup golfer John Hutchinson (71) the edge to win the Mandurah Cup this year.
Earlier this month, rain and wind lashed Mandurah Country Club’s course in conditions reminiscent of his former home course of Chorlton-cum-Hardy near Manchester, United Kingdom.
“The weather was atrocious, pouring and blowing a gale, just like Manchester,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“I was at home in it.”
Mr Hutchinson is one of the 30-year-old cup’s oldest winners, and his first in Australia after migrating 11 years ago.
He won the cup with a 138-stroke score on a 16-stroke handicap. His 65-stroke score on the first day of play set him up for a win after taking 73 strokes on the second day of play.
The win qualified Mr Hutchinson for the knockout stages of the club’s championships being played over two weekends and finishing on Sunday.
The cup tournament’s runner-up was Paul Gillam with 145 strokes, followed by Neil Langshaw (145) and Troy Murphy (147). Brenton Haines’ 150 strokes was the best gross over 36 holes.
Best nett score on the cup’s first day of play was Thomas Moore’s 73. Best gross scores on each day of play were Paul Tuckey’s 79 and David Hopkins’ 70.
Graham Bowen had Sunday’s best gross of 75 strokes.
