SCISSORS, irons, dyes and dryers aside, nothing beats the thrill of helping clients regain confidence with a striking new look, according to two cutting-edge Perth hairstylists.

On the radar as ‘ones to watch’, Joshua Congreve of city mainstay House of Ernest and Julia Cockman of Pierrot’s Hair Studios will showcase their flair for all things hair at the annual GenNext Gala at Hair Expo 2012.

Brimming with innovation and gusto, they are two of three WA creatives selected as part of the eight-member Aussie GenNext Project Team.

Congreve “fell into” the field of follicles after helping his friend with backstage make-up and hair for a ballet show. Overcome with excitement, he forgot all about his desire to be an actor.

“My main passion at the moment is up-styling for special occasions,” he said.

“Generally, people come in with an idea of what they want and so I ask questions: ‘where are you going for the occasion?’ and ‘what are you wearing?’ to gauge whether the style is suitable.

“Some come in with a picture of an up-do that is completely inappropriate – you really need to take all aspects into mind and find what’s appropriate for the whole look.”

Congreve and savvy stylist Cockman have dreams of working behind the scenes for leading catwalk shows and fashion shoots.

- Hair Expo – the southern hemisphere’s largest hairdressing event – is in Sydney from June 9-11.
