TASTING a good fortified wine is an experience all wine connoisseurs love.|But few can beat the full, rich flavours, colour, warmth and sweetness of an A-class muscat.

It seems the judges of the recent Swan Valley Wine Show (September 20-21) agree.

They awarded John Kosovich Winery the Best in Show award for its latest blend of its signature Liqueur Muscat.

Winemaker Anthony Kosovich was justifiably proud, although it was no surprise given his previous muscat blend picked up a lazy dozen gold medals and the Swan Wine Show’s coveted top award.

However, he believes this latest blend, bottled just three weeks ago, is a touch better than the previous one.

“We started making the Muscat in the mid-1980s, but some of the material we use for the muscat blend dates back to the ‘50s,” Anthony said.

“The new blend is rare. It’s very similar to our previous blend, but the material in this Muscat is older, a little bit more concentrated and rich.”

And if you have had the pleasure of tasting both blends of the Kosovich Muscat, you will notice the latest drop is quite a bit smoother and weighty on the palate.

“While it has mature flavours, there is still some freshness and that is important,” Anthony said.

Blended about two months ago, 600 litres was made but Anthony only bottles small amounts each time. “We were hoping this new blend would show well… it is rare to get a blend that old,” he said.
